Major earth quake kills hundreds across Turkey, Syria

Islamabad, Feb 6: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on Monday, killing hundreds of people as they slept, levelling buildings and sending tremors that were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus, Egypt and Iraq.

One of the largest quakes to strike Turkey in a century wiped out entire sections of major cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.

The quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said.

In their separate messages, both expressed grief and conveyed sympathies to the governments and people of the quake-hit Turkiye and Syria.

President Alvi said, “In this hour of grief, I and the Pakistani nation stand in solidarity with the people of Turkiye and Syria.”

He prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace and for the grant of patience to the bereaved families.

Prime Minister Sharif said he was deeply saddened by the news of a massive earthquake that struck the southeastern region of Turkiye and Syria.

He extended his profound condolences and sincere sympathies to the leadership and people of the two countries on the human and material loss.

Ice hockey in Hunza, Pakistan

The 05-day winter festival 2022 is happening in Altit. A large number of athletes are competing in Ice Hockey, Snowboarding and Skating. This most important winter sports events in GB is National Ice Hockey. Ice Skating Championship 2022, which started on the 18th of January in Ghulkin valley of Gojal, Hunza. Ban on import of luxury items in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 19:Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said his decision to ban the import of luxury items will save the country’s precious foreign exchange.
