Chief Justice of Pakistan till September 2023

Justice Umar Ata Bandial, the most senior judge of Supreme Court, will be Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 02.02.2022 till his retirement on September 18, 2023.

  • Justice Umar Ata Bandial was born on 17.09.1958 in Lahore. He received his elementary and secondary education at different schools in Kohat, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Lahore. He secured his B.A. (Economics) degree from Columbia University, USA followed by a Law Tripos degree from Cambridge University, UK and qualified as Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn, London. In 1983, he was enrolled as an Advocate of the Lahore High Court and some years later, as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
  • Justice Umar Ata Bandial will hold the position for 19 months on CJP position.
  • As per constitution, Supreme Court judges (including the chief justice) retire once they are 65, while high court justices superannuate on reaching 62 years of age .
  • Earlier on, CJP Gulzar Ahmed will retire after working in the top judicial position for more than two years. Justice Ahmed assumed office on December 21, 2019, replacing ex-CJP Justice Saqib Nisar.

Islamabad police launches WhatsApp number for citizens

Feb 16: Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police Wednesday launched WhatsApp number, enabling citizens direct access to police related services on smart phones. The citizens will receive all information about police services after getting themselves registered by sending a simple message on WhatsApp number 03342874287, 033ICTP  ICTP. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, Muhammad Ahsan Younus, in his video message termed the step towards modern policing in the federal capital. IGP said the citizens through WhatsApp could get services in both English and Urdu languages.
